1,500m Races Headline Friday Night Action in Indianapolis

By Scott Bush

Since 2004, the American Milers Club has offered an opportunity for the best distance runners in North America to line up with the simple goal of running fast. Track standouts such as Duane Solomon, Desi Linden, Shannon Rowbury, Alan Webb, Nate Brannen and Will Leer dot the all-time best lists for the series of races in Indianapolis and this year’s collection of talent proves the lasting legacy these races provide.

AMC founder Greg Harger states, "This meet series is and always has been primarily for the national class and emerging national class athletes that need race opportunities at the end of their training cycle when they are fit.”

He continues, “Secondarily, we are here on the calendar for the redemption and salvation of a track season and in somewhat regular cases annually, we serve as a shot to reclaim a track career when injury and or illness has derailed someone for a season or two."

Friday night, the action is hot across the board, as the 800m and 1,500m becomes the primary focus of this year’s first AMC event. The men’s 1,500m is arguably the deepest and most talented in the field. Led by experience veterans Craig Miller, Matthew Elliot and Russell Brown, as well as Canadian standout Olivier Collins and a collection of sharp collegiate athletes, sub-3:39 (the USA Outdoor T&F Champs qualifying time) should be shattered by over a half dozen athletes.

While Miller, Elliot, Brown and Collins lead the way, University of Wisconsin teammates Austin Mudd and Reed Connor, along with Southern Illinois University’s Zach Dahleen all enter sharp from the collegiate season and ready to lower their respective personal bests.

Other seeking to dip under the 3:39 mark are Danny Stockberger, who enters with a seasonal and personal best of 3:39.79, Tony Jordanek with a PR of 3:38.35 from 2013 and NJ*NY TC’s Christian Gonzalez.

In the women’s 1,500m, former University of Notre Dame All-American Rebecca Tracy leads the way with her season best of 4:12.37. Tracy, who’s also entered in the women’s 800m, seems poised to challenge the 4:10 barrier and with a strong field surrounding her from the gun, she has the best shot she’s had all season long.

Speed River’s Lauren Hagans is entered with a 4:13.72 seasonal best, while former University of Michigan runner Becca Addison comes in with a 4:16.56 2014 best. These two, similar to Tracy, are also entered in the 800m, but the three athletes make a formidable bunch that should lead the way in the longer of the two events. Christy Cazzola, who comes in with a 4:16.44 personal best from 2013 and Clerc Simpson round out the top favorites in the field.

The women’s 800m is nearly as deep. As stated, Addison, Tracy and Hagans all enter with personal bests under 2:05 for the two lap race, with Hagans leading the way with her 2:02.97 from Guelph late last month.

Jesse Lea Carlin, Brigitte Mania and Kenyetta Iyevbele all enter with personal bests of 2:04.40 or faster. Carlin owns a seasonal best of 2:04.40, with a PR of 2:03.42, while Mania and Iyevbele have bests of 2:04.40 and 2:03.88 respectively. Throw in former University of Michigan middle distance standout Amanda Eccleston, and you can one heck of a field with the potential to have four or more runners dip under 2:04.

Not to be overlooked, the men’s 800m rounds out the four distance races. Alex Ullman leads the way with his seasonl best of 1:47.71, while Jeremy Wilk and Canadian Corey Bellemore round out the very top competitors with sub-1:50 personal bests. Craig Miller is also entered in the field with his 1:51.16 personal best.

Hager summarizes his expectations for Friday night’s event, as well as the second AMC event on Sunday by stating, "My view of the races is not ever on the prospective winners but always looking for every athlete in the meet having an opportunity to post SBs and/or PBs. A couple years ago we had a young man run dead last in a section of the 1500 and he posted a second and a half PR. That is as good a series memory as any.”
